Nextcloud VPS requirements for 1, 5 and 20 users
Nextcloud's own docs refuse to give one number, and for good reason: RAM depends on how many people are active at the same moment, which apps you enable, and whether you bolt on Office, antivirus or full-text search. Here is what the Nextcloud developers do say, turned into concrete sizes.
Sizing guide
Our recommendations, derived from the sourced figures below. Not measurements.
| Scenario | RAM | vCPU | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 user (just you) | 4 GB (3 GB base + 1 GB) | 3 (2 + 1) | Base AIO with no heavy add-ons. 2 GB is the stated floor but the forum thread above shows what living at the floor feels like. Add 1 GB if you enable ClamAV, Talk Recording or full-text search (their 3 GB minimum). |
| 5 users | 4–8 GB | 3–7 | The rule counts active users. If only one or two people sync at once, 4–5 GB is in line with it. If all five might be uploading at the same time (a family dumping holiday photos), the rule says 8 GB and 7 vCores. |
| 20 users | Base 3 GB + 1 GB per concurrent user | 2 + 1 per concurrent user | Twenty accounts rarely means twenty simultaneous sessions, and the rule is explicitly per active user. Estimate your real concurrency first. With 5 at once that is 8 GB; with all 20 at once it is 23 GB and 22 vCores, which is a dedicated-server problem, not a cheap-VPS one. |
Official requirements

|---|---|---|
| Per-process memory | Minimum 128 MB RAM per process, 512 MB per process recommended | Nextcloud Admin Manual: System requirements checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| Built-in updater | Needs at least 256 MB | Nextcloud Admin Manual: System requirements checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| AIO minimum | With any optional container enabled: at least 2 GB RAM, a dual-core CPU and 40 GB system storage | nextcloud/all-in-one discussion #1335 (AIO interface text quoted by maintainer) checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| AIO heavy add-ons | ClamAV, Talk Recording-server or Fulltextsearch: at least 3 GB RAM (Talk Recording also +2 vCPUs). Everything enabled: at least 5 GB RAM and a quad-core CPU. Recommended: 1 GB more than the minimum | nextcloud/all-in-one discussion #1335 checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| Per-user rule | 1 vCore and 1 GB RAM per active user, on top of the AIO base requirement | nextcloud/all-in-one discussion #1335: General recommendations for the best performance checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| PHP-FPM workers | A typical worker uses 50–100 MB (more with Imagick or LDAP). Default pm.max_children = 5 limits you to five simultaneous PHP requests | Nextcloud Admin Manual: Server tuning checked Oct 21, 2026 |
| Install guide baseline | The official AIO-on-Linux guide assumes a machine with at least 4 GB RAM and two cores | Nextcloud blog: How to install Nextcloud All-in-One on Linux checked Oct 21, 2026 |
What people report in practice
Individual reports, not controlled tests. Versions, hardware and settings differ, so treat these as data points, not guarantees.

AIO on a 2 GB instance ran with RAM and swap near 100% and froze for minutes every ~30 min; better after moving to 4 GB. Maintainer's accepted answer: use at least 4 GB for AIO

Snap install idles around 1 GB on a 2 GB VM with 512 MB swap, but needed far more at peak with many concurrent users

Collabora or Elasticsearch make 2 GB too little; imaginary with lots of photos needs another 1–2 GB; 8 GB used for a home AIO with >100 GB of photos

Our measurements: coming soon
We haven't measured Nextcloud yet, so there are no VPSfit lab numbers on this page. When we do, they'll show the app version, the plan it ran on, the date, and the raw data. Here's what we'll record:
- Idle RAM per container for a stock AIO install, then with ClamAV, Collabora and full-text search enabled
- RAM and CPU while 1, 5 and 20 simulated WebDAV clients sync a fixed file set concurrently
- Preview-generation peak for 1,000 photos
- PHP-FPM worker RSS on the current release
What drives Nextcloud's RAM use
Concurrent requests, i.e. PHP-FPM workers
Each simultaneous request is served by a PHP worker using roughly 50–100 MB. Desktop and phone clients poll every 30 seconds, so several connected devices keep workers busy even when nobody is clicking. Total PHP RAM is about workers × per-worker RSS, which is why the docs give a per-process figure instead of a per-server one.
Preview (thumbnail) generation
Generating image and video previews is the most expensive routine job. A photo-heavy instance needs more RAM and CPU while the backlog is processed; the AIO maintainers recommend the Preview Generator app to pre-generate them on a schedule.
Optional containers and apps
ClamAV, Collabora/OnlyOffice, full-text search (Elasticsearch/OpenSearch), Talk Recording and imaginary each add their own memory floor. They are the difference between a 2 GB and an 8 GB Nextcloud.
The database and cache
MariaDB/Postgres plus Redis for file locking and caching. Small on a personal instance, but they grow with file count and need RAM to stay fast.
Gotchas on a VPS
- Don't leave PHP-FPM at its defaults. The stock
pm.max_children = 5caps you at five simultaneous PHP requests and causes 502/504 errors under real use. The server tuning docs give the formula:pm.max_children = available RAM for PHP ÷ average worker RSS. Setting it higher than RAM allows causes swapping, which is worse than queueing. - SQLite is for testing. The server tuning docs recommend MariaDB/MySQL or Postgres for real use; SQLite struggles with concurrent access.
- Network storage for everything is slow. The AIO maintainers recommend SSD for everything and advise against NFS/SMB for the main data (fine for backups). A cheap VPS with a big attached volume is common; keep the database and app on the local disk.
- Cloudflare proxy/tunnel. The AIO maintainers specifically advise against Cloudflare's proxy or tunnel, saying it "potentially slows down things by a lot and introduces a lot of problems". Plan to expose it another way.
- Docker Desktop is not a server. If you test at home on Windows or macOS first, Docker Desktop's VM adds 4 GB+ of overhead (per the AIO maintainers) that a Linux VPS doesn't have. Don't size your VPS from that test.
